The 4-Minute Mid-Afternoon Energy Stretch
The 4-Minute Mid-Afternoon Energy Stretch
Issue 5 of the Desk Mobility Brief. By mid-afternoon many of us feel flat: the eyes are tired, the upper back is stiff, and the next meeting is already waiting. This four-minute stretch is designed for that slump. It wakes the thoracic spine, opens the chest and resets the shoulders without leaving your desk for long. Issue 2 covered neck, eyes and hands; Issue 3 was the end-of-day shutdown; Issue 4 was the morning warm-up. Today is the afternoon bridge.
1. Seated thoracic extension (1 minute). Sit tall near the front of the chair. Interlace your fingers behind your head, elbows wide. Gently lean the upper back over the chair back (or just lift the chest) as you breathe in, then return as you breathe out. Move slowly for about eight rounds.
2. Seated twist (1 minute). Cross your arms over your chest. Rotate to the right on an out-breath, back to centre on an in-breath, then to the left. Keep the hips facing forward and the movement smooth for about a minute.
3. Shoulder-blade squeezes (1 minute). Sit tall. Draw the shoulder blades gently together and down, hold for three seconds, release. Repeat ten times. Keep the neck long and the jaw soft.
4. Standing reach and side bend (1 minute). Stand up. Reach both arms overhead, then lean gently to the right for 20 seconds and to the left for 20 seconds. Finish with three slow shoulder rolls backward.
A note on energy
Movement will not replace sleep or a real break, but changing shape every few hours often makes the last stretch of the day feel lighter.
Safety note
Keep every stretch mild. Stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness or dizziness. If you have an existing neck or back condition, check with a qualified health professional first.
